Although the Detroit Tigers were unable to finish the four-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox today, losing 7-4 in the day game. Justin Verlander took the loss today, going six innings and giving up 11 hits along with 7 earned runs. Verlander is 6-6 with a 5.22 ERA in his last 15 starts. Those stats are for sure reason to worry but I feel with an adjustment or two, JV will be good again when he needs to be: the end of the season.
With that being said, he might want to figure it out sooner rather than later because they could be without their starting middle infield for a while. Second baseman Omar Infante is already out with an injury (but hopefully back soon) yet starting Shortstop Johnny Peralta is believed to have connections with the same Biogenesis scandal as the already suspended Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun. According to Mlive.com, Peralta denied to speak about the situation, which is smart on his part for his sake. So with that said, Tiger fans, two questions. 1. If he does get suspended and admits he used, what should the Tigers do to replace him? 2. If he admits to it, would you want him back when the suspension is over?
For me the answer to number one is the burning question as of now. It is only six days to the trading deadline and if Peralta does get suspended then the Tigers will have to make a move at the deadline. Yahoo.com says that possibilities include Omar Quintanilla, Josh Harrison, Brendan Ryan, Jonathan Herrera, and Dee Gordon. Most of these guys would be downgrades on the offensive side but most of these guys are fast especially Gordon. So if worst came to worst, I wouldn’t mind Dee Gordon. However, I don’t know what you would have to give up for him.
As for the second question, I think it would be tough for me to pick but I don’t know if I would like him in a Tiger uniform anymore if he did. It would be a very bittersweet thing since he has been a big part of this team the last few years but I’m a fan of baseball and the game needs to be clean.
What do you think? Will Verlander recover? Will Peralta be gone? Give us your thoughts either in the comment section, on Facebook or via Twitter @DSBloggers.
