Draft time!

The NBA Finals are officially over, which means it’s time to start looking towards the NBA Draft.  But before looking ahead to the 2013 Draft, ESPN took a look back at the 2003 Draft and Chad Ford decided to redraft based on what we know now.

Obviously the pick for Cleveland remains the same in LeBron James, but for the Pistons, Ford would take Dwayne Wade.  Wade has won three NBA titles now and quickly became one of the best players in the NBA.  This season his body has started to break down, but he would not have had to take on such a big role on the 2003 Pistons as he did with the 2003 Heat.

The Pistons already had a solid starting back-court in Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton, so Wade would have been coming off the bench for this team.  He would have been able to help keep this team in playoff and title contention for years, and maybe would still be a viable superstar in this league.

Most amazingly about Ford’s redraft is he still has Darko going in the lottery!  At the 14th pick to the Seattle Supersonics/Oklahoma City Thunder Ford has Milicic being the last pick in the lottery.  Ford admits that he doesn’t think Darko would have been a superstar, but that his career would have been a lot better than it was.

Now for the 2013 Draft, Ford has put out his latest mock draft and has the Pistons taking Michigan point guard Trey Burke.  Now this pick would not be one that I dislike, the team needs a point guard even if Jose Calderon is retained.  Brandon Knight is most likely moving to shooting guard (if he is still on the team) and Calderon is a great distributor but an awful defender.

Burke played great in the NCAA tournament and deserves to be a high lottery pick.  He is a slasher and will be able to get to the basket, but will he be big enough to absorb the contact and still score?  He also isn’t as quick as the elite point guards going side to side according to scouts, so will he be a defensive liability?

Even with these questions I think that the Pistons would be happy if Burke falls to them at number eight.  This team needs a boost and the local college product will be able to do that.  The core of Monroe, Knight, Drummond and Burke will be a great group to continue to build around.

So what do you think Pistons fans, would Wade have kept this team in title contention?  Should Darko still go in the lottery if the 2003 Draft was held again?  And should the Pistons draft point guard Trey Burke in the 2013 NBA Draft?  Let us know at DetroitSportsBloggers.com or on Facebook and Twitter.
