Tigers Sweep Indians

This weekend was a pretty good one for the Detroit Tigers.

The Tigers swept the Cleveland Indians right out of Detroit, increasing their lead in the American League Central to 5.5 games. Obviously this is a good thing for the Tigers but my question is, how comfortable do feel about this team moving forward for the rest of the season?

I think that the Tigers are in great shape and the start by Jose Alvarez was just what they needed. Here is some reaction from today’s start for Alvarez.

“(Alvarez) did everything and more that you could’ve asked for — he was absolutely terrific,” manager Jim Leyland said. “This is a good thing. He got to see what this was like.”

“It’s not very often you send a guy that pitched like that, but obviously, Sanchez should be back in the rotation for his next start,” Leyland said. “This was a good sign for us because we know now that we have some insurance down there (Triple-A Toledo) for sure.”

“It’s impressive getting here,” Alvarez said. “I tried to control the emotions the most I can. I think I did.”

Don Kelly’s observation from centerfield: “Every pitch was moving all over the place.”

Torii Hunter’s from rightfield: “His ball was moving like crazy.”

Well, this is a great thing for the Tigers because with questions about fifth starter Rick Porcello. He has been pitching as of late but it is the consistency that kills him. Using him out of the bullpen could be a possibility in the near future.

As for the lead in the division, I think the Tigers should be in first for the rest of the year. They are the best team in the Central but I believe the Indians and Royals will give the Tigers some competition along the way to another Central title. So I’m pretty sure this weekend was a good sign of things to come for the Tigers.
