According to numerous sources Ryan Suter is expected to decide where he is going to sign today. A lot of teams had interest in the prize defenseman, but the list of available suitors is dropping.
TSN’s Darren Dreger said that the Carolina Hurricanes are one team that is out of the running for Suter which leaves a few teams on his wish list, a list that includes the Red Wings.
Nick Kypreos of TSN says that the Wings are the favorite currently to get the services of Suter, but the Penguins, Wild and the Predators also remain in the hunt. After signing four players yesterday, the Wings still have about $17 million in cap space this year and can afford both Suter and Parise at the$7-8 million they are asking for.
I think that the Red Wings offer Suter (and Parise) the best chance to win a cup in the next few years with the mix of youth and experience we have on every level. The Penguins are the only real team I’m worried about him signing with as they are the closest of the remaining teams to Detroit in the amount of talent and exposure the team receives.
Another reason the Wings need to make the strongest push and sign Suter is that all of the secondary options are starting to come off the market including Jason Garrison and Sami Salo. Only time will tell where Suter ends up but everyone in Detroit is on the edge of their seats, myself included.
