Tigers to Start Jacob Turner on Thursday

The time is about right.

On Thursday, the Detroit Tigers will have right-handed prospect Jacob Turner have his first start of the 2012 season against the St. Louis Cardinals. So far in the minors this season, he has pitched in Lakeland and Toledo. In Lakeland, he posted a 1.66 ERA in four starts. With the Mud Hens, Turner went 2-1 with a 3.43 ERA. He also had 19 walks and 27 strikeouts in 42 innings pitched.

I believe that this about the right time to bring Turner up. The Tigers really have no other choice but to make this move. Turner should be able to handle the majors better this time around and give a few quality starts for the Tigers. He will now join the rotation consisting of  Justin Verlander, Doug Fister Max Scherzer, and Rick Porcello.

I think they are trying to do one of two things with Turner. They could be using him because they have Drew Smyly on the disabled list and want to see how he does. Or the Tigers could be calling him up to show him off and use him as trade bait. I see it as possibly being a little bit of both. There have been rumors the Tigers are interested in Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster. However, I can’t see the Tigers making the Dempster for Turner trade but you never know. Anything can happen when the time is now or never for the Tigers to win a World Series with this team.
