The big news of the day is that Pavel Datsyuk has had arthroscopic knee surgery and will be out for two weeks. Mike Babcock talked to the media before today’s game against the Blackhawks about the injury:
Everything is real good. He had a fragment in his knee, an old thing we wanted to clear up prior to playoff time. This way we have an opportunity to get him going 100 percent before playoff time.
In other news, the Wings made a trade today to acquire former Red Wing Kyle Quincey from Colorado. But the twist to the story is Quincey was traded twice within an hour as he went from Colorado to Tampa Bay and then from Tampa Bay to Detroit.
Lightning GM Steve Yzerman traded Steve Downie to Colorado for Quincey and then traded Quincey to Detroit for the Wings first-round pick and minor league prospect Sebastian Piche. Quincey will pair with Jonathon Ericsson on the third defensive line and Jakub Kindl and Mike Commodore will serve as depth defensemen in case of injury.
Finally, Jimmy Howard and Dan Cleary returned from injury tonight. Howard made 27 saves on 29 shots in a 2-1 loss while Cleary had 19 shifts and was a -1 with a shot in the game. With the return of Howard, Ty Conklin was placed on waivers and was sent to Grand Rapids while Joey MacDonald will remain with the Wings in the backup goalie role.
