This weekend has to be one of the most eventful weekends in Detroit sports history. We are fortune enough to have the Tigers in the MLB Playoffs, the Lions playing in a big and meaningful game early in the season for the first time in a long time, both DI college teams playing, and the Red Wings participating in pre-season.
Honestly, this is one of the best times that I can remember for the city and its sports. However, this week, I’m going to be pretty short and sweet (sarcasm, this is my longest post ever) in my picks and everyone needs to make sure they watch at least some of these games this weekend.
I will start off with the Detroit Tigers and their two games this weekend. In game one, the pitching match-up is Justin Verlander vs.C.C. Sabathia. This game could go either way because with their aces on the mound, both teams are pretty strong. However, I feel the up start Tigers will win game one. For game two, the matchup is Doug Fister and Ivan Nova. Both have been really surprising and pitching well of late. I think both starters will have trouble in their first post-season starts and the Yankees will win in the late innings, making it 1-1 coming to Detroit.
The Michigan Wolverines are playing in Ann Arbor vs. Minnesota this weekend. Minnesota has had some on and off the field issues of late but will give Michigan a good fight in this game. I’m attending this one and it will be my first ever game at the Big House. I believe that the Wolverines have too much talent for the Golden Gophers to handle. Michigan by 10.
Michigan State will travel to the Horseshoe to play the Buckeyes of Ohio State. The Spartans are coming off a blowout game against Central Michigan and are looking for revenge in this contest. Ohio State is coming off of a huge win as well and this should be a good Big Ten battle. I pick the experience and leadership of the Spartans to prevail. The pick is Spartans by 8.
In a section I started last week, the most exciting college football game of the week to me is #8 Nebraska at #7 Wisconsin. This should be an all around great game and if you have time to, tune in. My pick is Wisconsin by 4.
My upset pick in college football will be one with a local tie. The game is SMU (Southern Methodist University) at #20 TCU (Texas Christian University). TCU has shown at times that it can be scored on early and often but have come back to win this season. I think SMU will win the game in a shootout, with a big reason being because of their running back (Oxford,MI high school grad) Zach Line. He has only 463 yards but has 11 touchdowns in 4 games. Look for the Mustangs to finally pull this off. SMU wins by 3.
Now for the NFL. The Lions are off to a hot start and will go in to Dallas with a mission to come out of there 4-0. The Cowboys are a tough team though and will provide a solid matchup for the Lions. Despite that, I have a hunch the magic isn’t done for the Lions and they will prevail on Sunday. Pick: Lions by 7.
The most exciting game in the NFL this weekend is probably going to be the Lions vs. Cowboys. Yet, another game to watch would be the New England Patriots at the Oakland Raiders. That will most likely be a shootout and a close game but I think New England will prevail by 6.
My upset pick of the week is the San Fransisco 49ers over the almighty Philadelphia Eagles. I think that without Mike Vick at 100% the Eagles are bound to be a different team. Even though the game is in Philly, I think that the 49ers will stun the crowd. I pick 49ers by 3.
In watching these games this weekend, make sure to stay warm and safe. This weekend looks to be one a great one for Detroit sports and sports in general. If it is anything like the last day in baseball, it should be one epic sports weekend.
