Meet the newest Red Wing

Free agency has opened in the NHL and the Wings have made their first acquisition, defenseman Mike Commodore formally of division rival Columbus.  The contract is only for one season and one million dollars.  Commodore is a big defenseman at 6’5″ and almost 230 pounds and is a more defensive minded blue liner.  His career high in points was 29 back in 2006-2007 when he played in Carolina and his only other season of more than 20 points was his first in Columbus.

The biggest issue with Commodore is his health, only playing in 70 plus games in three of his nine seasons.  His big body should fit well on the third defensive pairing with Jonathon Ericsson as the Wings now have six defensemen signed heading in to next season.  Time will tell if they still try to add another top four defenseman before the start of next season.  If one thing is true about Commodore, he will be an entertaining player and one of the fan favorites heading in to next season.  You can follow him on Twitter (@Commie22) and if this picture is a sign of things to come, count me in as one of his followers
