For the state’s two biggest college basketball programs, life is good. First off, The Michigan Wolverines defeated the Northwestern Wildcats tonight by a score of 66-64.
The Wolverines are now 14-3 overall on the season and 4-1 in Big Ten Conference play. The three losses on the year have been to quality opponents. The losses are to Duke, Virgina and vs. Indiana. Two of the three games were road games and they played Duke in Maui. The Wolverines are looking as good as they have under Beilein, but a tough rest of the way in the Big Ten schedule will prove how good Michigan really is. However, they are off to a great start.
But not to be out done two years in a row, the Michigan State Spartans are now on a 15-game-winning streak after crushing Iowa at home by a score of 95-61. Senior Draymond Green had 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Spartans. Keith Appling added 15 points and nine assists. Michigan State had 25 assists as a team. The Spartans looked as good as they have all season in the victory. With the win, the Spartans moved to first place in the Big Ten with a perfect 4-0 record. Here is what coach Tom Izzo had to say, according to freep.com:
“We played above what we can play. They played below,” Izzo said.
Pretty short and sweet from a coach who must be very pleased the way his team is playing right now.
While both teams are playing well, I can’t wait until they play each other this year. It will happen next Tuesday at Crisler Arena. The start time will be at 7:00. This game will be a very intense battle that will end up getting heated and chippy by the end of the game. I expect a very close game but I my early feeling will be the home team will win. But more on the game in the future.
For now, both basketball programs are in the national spot light and on their way to the NCAA tournament. That is why you should watch as much as you can now, just another reason to love Detroit (and Michigan) Sports.
